Had a productive phone call with @SecAzar on the vaccine rollout. Frustration over Beijing’s continued obstructionism around origins and nature of the virus. We owe Taiwan immense gratitude for their bold and swift action in notifying the US of this novel virus. #TaiwanCanHelp
I have engaged with #ModelUN groups throughout the United States and youth representatives at the UN. Model UN can help illuminate the path forward for the actual UN, and even in hard times we can find inspiration in the voices of young people committed to a brighter future.
A great privilege to speak today w/President Tsai @iingwen. We discussed the many ways Taiwan is a model for the world, as demonstrated by its success in fighting COVID-19 and all that Taiwan has to offer in the fields of health, technology & cutting-edge science.
Unfortunately, Taiwan is unable to share those successes in @UN venues, including the World Health Assembly, as a result of PRC obstruction. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that more information, more transparency, is part of the answer.
Our new webpage documents the Chinese Communist Party’s blatant disregard for human rights. The United States will always stand up for those who are denied their fundamental human rights, including freedom of religion or belief and expression.
Best wishes to Volker Perthes as he assumes leadership of @UNITAMS. UNITAMS has a critical role to play in peace in Darfur and in supporting the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people. It requires the full support of the Sudanese government and international community.
The storming of the U.S. Capitol today is unacceptable. Lawlessness and rioting -- here or around the world -- is always unacceptable. I have travelled to many countries and always support the right of every human being to protest peacefully for their beliefs and their causes.
Problems in fragile states do not remain within borders, threatening global peace & security. This Council must make @UN Missions more effective thru timelier humanitarian aid, greater burden-sharing, and improved coordination of humanitarian, development & peacekeeping efforts.
70% of all @USAID assistance goes to fragile states, and the U.S. continues to lead the world’s contributions to @UNPeacekeeping operations, providing 25% of its budget. We encourage other govts to join a collective response to complex crises & fragility.
UNSC VTC: Fragile states are often vulnerable to armed conflict, destabilizing violence & terrorist activities. COVID-19 has only exacerbated this fragility. We must help fragile states improve their internal stability lest they become failed states.
Outraged by the shameful arrests of dozens of pro-democracy leaders & activists in Hong Kong. While the Chinese Communist Party seeks to silence dissent and undermine Hong Kong's autonomy, the U.S. stands with the people of Hong Kong and their long-standing commitment to freedom.
The U.S. will always stand for human rights. The Chinese Communist Party continues to abuse these rights, such as arbitrarily detaining or imprisoning Uyghurs, such as Ekpar Asat, who has been reportedly detained in Xinjiang. We call for his immediate release. (Courtesy photo)
The U.S. recognizes Interim President Juan Guaidó and the democratically elected 2015 National Assembly as the legitimate representatives of the Venezuelan people. The international community must remain united in supporting Venezuela's return to democracy.
President @JGuaido and the democratically elected 2015 National Assembly are the only democratic representatives of the Venezuelan people as recognized by the international community, and they should be freed from Maduro’s harassment, threats, persecution, and other abuses.
